It’s all Skin and Bones

Rhythm of The Earth World Festival

Hong Kong’s Li Po Chun United World College staged a special theatre dance performance by an Iranian student entitled Skin and Bones on 1617 February. It portrays her struggle growing up in Iran and not being able to follow her passion in dance. The theatre piece was inspired by her own life experiences and personal background.

The 7th Rhythm of the Earth World Festival and World Musiq event was recently held in Bangkok on 15-19 February. Admission to the event was free of charge.

The lead dancer was Israeli student, Maya Dagan who plays the role of Bita Bell.

“Dancing has been my passion ever since I was a child. I was never able to persue my dream because I was born in a country where dancing is banned. Living in Iran and being oppressed by lack of freedom encouraged me more to find my voice in dancing,” the Iranian student said.

“When I came to Li Po College, I realised that there are many opportunities here for me to grow. I struggled so much to choose the right subject but in the end I took two arts - theatre and visual arts. (in fact I’m the only one in my year.) I had to

make an independent project for my theatre course, so I thought, why not dance theatre - my passion,” she added.

“I started working on it from summer,” she continued. “I kept searching for music and brainstorming. I knew that I was going to focus on my own life, but I was still hesitate to open up my life story for everyone. The training itself was a complex process. First I went through some basic theatrical activities, then to trust building then to the emotional. Since this piece is based on my life story, I had to bond with my dancers.

According to the organisers, Skin and Bones will be staged at the Fringe Club in April, and Elsa High School students will be attending.

“You can dance anywhere, even if only in your heart,” she concluded.
